A 12.9-inch iPad makes no sense

Bloomberg report:

Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s suppliers are preparing to manufacture the company’s largest-ever iPad, with production scheduled to commence by the first quarter of next year, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

The new iPad will have a screen measuring 12.9 inches diagonally, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the details aren’t public.

Unless this is the weight of the current iPad Air or less, I see very little use case for such a device. A large touchscreen device could be successful in that it would make a useful addition to a professional environment, however once it crosses a certain weight, it would spend most of it’s time on a table, positioned upright; Apple have always condemned vertical touchscreens as having poor ergonomics.

Using it as a stationary device—perhaps on a coffee table—could be interesting, but expensive for something that would not receive heavy use in this case.

I just cannot see how Apple would market this to the masses. Ultimately, a 12.9″ iPad would be awkward in every sense of the word.
